Review

Call it modern back-porch music or old-timey tunes for the new millennium. Canada's Nathan culls the keening quality of early country and tempers it with a 21st century sensibility. Like fellow Canadians the Be Good Tanyas, their Po' Girl offshoot, and Portland, Oregon's Amelia, Nathan offers twangy, tremulous female vocals, an array of banjos, fiddles, and guitars, brushed drums, and a sense of quiet calm even at their most lively. Jimson Weed stays steadfastly true to this manifesto. Singer/songwriter Keri McTighe's warble is part Dolly Parton, part Sylvia Tyson, and she often gives voice to darkly rural sentiments. Like those other members of the "folk-rock nouveau" mini-movement, Nathan displays a gift for melody and harmonies of the haunting mountain-music variety, accompanied by country instrumentation, carnival grooves, and train beats--making music for the ages. --Michael Ross
