So explains gospel-folk matriarch Odetta in the liner notes to this exceptional 13-song holiday collection. The esteemed diva wraps her rich, full voice around an astute assortment of reverent standards such as "Go Tell It on the Mountain" and "Rise Up Shepherd and Follow," fleshing out the album with less-familiar fare. Spare bass and percussion bedecks these spirituals, but not much accompaniment is required when Odetta is playing guitar and singing. --Steven Stolder
