Review

Leave it to the folks at OmniTone to find thrillingly original talent--or to bring together inspired collaborations between veterans (as on 1999's Saturn's Child, a spare meeting between pianist Frank Kimbrough and vibist Joe Locke). Saxophonist and clarinetist Oscar Noriega falls into the label's "young talent" camp and here fronts a spectacular quartet of veteran drummer Jim Black, guitarist Brad Shepik, and trumpeter Cuong Vu (who also hit big on OmniTone with Bound). Noriega has a rasped tone that weaves into unflappable expanses, only to jar the floor in a flash with bolting, jostling exclamations. Vu's got a full-throated roar on brass, with Black sticking often to a tempo, which shows off his control and talent at diminutive punctuations. Shepik, multilingual at all times on guitar, fits in always, sometimes jabbing, sometimes sending up six-string yawps that prod the band to unexpectedly sweet heights. --Andrew Bartlett
