Review

With a dozen years of releases under their belts, Outrageous Cherry are the preeminent power pop rockers from Detroit (a city primarily associated with Motown and the garage punk of The Stooges and The MC5). The disc opens with the punchy and incredibly catchy song, "Pretty Girls Go Insane." This opener sounds so right it's amazing it hasn't already been written. Singer-guitarist-songwriter Matthew Smith has matured into a composer who draws on the past without being trapped by it. These songs bristle with immediacy, with nary a hint of nostalgia to be found. The twelve songs clock in at thirty-seven minutes, proof once again that brevity can be a powerful tool. --David Greenberger
