Review
Since 1962, flutist-saxophonist Paul Horn has been playing world music, long before the term was invented. On this CD, Horn musically explores the African continent with Sekou Camara Cobra, Francine Martel, and Nathalie Dussault on vocals, djembe, kora, and percussion. From the West African processional pulsations of "Kassa," "Santea," and "Yankadi" to the Afro-Arabic impressions of "Allah Lake," Horn's warm flute and soprano saxophone lines float above these ancestral anthems. The tracks highlight the best characteristics of traditional African music: complex contrapuntal rhythms, vocal call-and-response, and intriguing melodic structures. Paul Horn narrows the gap between the first and third worlds and creates a new world of soulful and syncopated sounds. --Eugene Holley Jr.
