Review

"Depeche Mode collides with Rush" is how one listener described the debut Project Vector CD, Reality Show. While that might be an overly brief summary, it gives an idea of the kind of seeming polar opposites that come together on this unusual 2005 release. Elements of modern techno, industrial, '80s synth music, progressive rock, and even grunge freely interweave in a sound that's always in flux but somehow manages to work as a cohesive whole. Singer/keyboardist/bassist/guitarist Dave Gastambide's full, resonant vocals cut through the lush sonic background loud and clear, dealing with emotionally-charged and controversial subjects like Internet addiction, school violence, gay teen suicide, and modern society's new favorite pastime, reality television.

Progressive rock fans will enjoy the aggressive bass guitar parts and "thinking man's" lyrics, and techno lovers will dig the vast array of both retro and modern synthesizer textures, not to mention the infectious grooves. Reality Show is an ambitious experiment in fusing genres that few would consider attempting to combine quite like this. Project Vector has been likened to Thomas Dolby and Trent Reznor in regard to the willingness to explore new combinations of sounds and styles that might seem bizarre at first. Anyone looking to add something genuinely different to their CD collection need look no further.
