Review

Rebel Pride Band CD "It Is What It Is" This CD has been a long time coming for this Tampa Bay, Florida based band. After years of struggles down different avenues of various styles, outside writers, other band members, bad deals, and general bumps in the road an all original recording surfaced in May of 2005. The recording session was done in just a few nights at Steve Connelly’s Zen Studios. Band member Tom Spittle found this studio when he recorded there with a Christian rock band called The Nineveh Project. Tom Says," I had known of Steve from his days in the Headlights and figured if this guy can back up Rodger McQuin and appear on The Tonight Show he must have something going on." The band found Steve easy to work with and very supportive. Each song was cut live in the studio with minimum overdubs. Each song has its unique origins. Stomp Yer Foots is a raunchy dance number intended to get you up and rocking. It breaks in to a different grove for the guitar solos first by Tom closing with a wah lead then by Brian before retuning to the theme. GITITON follows that same feel of just rockin’ your socks off and getting you “ slippin’ on the floor like a chicken wing”. Tampa Bay Worksong was composed and sang by Brian and has a two step feel for a good time dance feel with train a comin’ drum beat by singer Pat Buffo. Slippin’Away starts out bluesy and turns to Latin beat for the solos first by Tommy, then Brian finishes out the change before a triumphant return to the blues. The Hard Way Was composed by drummer Sonny Harlan ( a prolific songwriter with many more tunes to come). A tune about having had enough. Its layered vocal harmonies round out the end of this tune nicely. Drop the Ball is a tip of the hat to one of Tommy’s influences Stevie Ray Vaughn. It’s about looking for love at the local tavern. The Cd finises out with a song written by all the band members. The lyrics of Past Buffo tell about the Florida panther from its perspective. It’s the tale of the depleting habit for one of Floridas unique creatures. The CD leans heavily on Florida style southern rock and carries on that tradition with furry. The CD is dedicated to Hollywood Dave. Dave was a mainstay of the West coast Beach music scene you recently passed on to the great gig in the sky.
