Review

In 1959, Ronnie Hawkins disappeared into Canada, and was rarely seen again south of the 49th parallel. Trapped in a wonderful time-warp, he reemerged in 1972 on Monument Records. His role as the man who put the Band together was now recognized, and rockabilly was making a comeback, so the time seemed ripe for his return. The whiplash voice was still intact, and his ability to galvanize any band into shape is evident as the Nashville A-Team give more than they knew they had. It's almost wall-to-wall standards ("Memphis," "Bony Maronie," "Bo Diddley," ), but they're executed with such raw enthusiasm and aching precision, it's like hearing them anew. --Colin Escott
