Review

Science Park is the songwriting and recording vehicle for Myke Weiskopf. Futurama, Weiskopf's second album, is full of synthesizer and programmed bass and drum tracks and begs to be categorized as a synthpop-dance album. But don't be fooled--this is pure pop à la XTC and Squeeze, with its melodic, sing-along tunefulness, although it also makes a definite nod toward a more angular Soft Cell and Gary Numan style of new wave. With all the attendant bells, whistles, and sound affects on Futurama, Weiskopf's tasteful use of the studio environment is reminiscent of the early-'80s work of engineering wizard Thomas Dolby. A more swinging but otherwise carbon-copy cover of the Magnetic Fields' melancholic "Lonely Highway" reveals one of Weiskopf's more obscure influences and associates him with a vital, lo-fi pop underground. --Michael Wells Second album from Bostonian avant-synthpop project.
