Review

Musical trends change at the speed of light. Hence, Second Coming's heavy grunge rock comes off as almost retro. Of course, that brooding Zeppelin-and-Sabbath-influenced sound was a bit retro from the start, really. And while this Seattle-based quartet does pray to the god of Alice in Chains and Soundgarden on tunes such as "Tonight," it also ably beefs up the testosterone with the thug boogie of "Soft" and moodily waxes atmospheric on "Vintage Eyes." The turgid sense of foreboding on "Free" also hammers home. In spite of occasional pretension and high dramatics on "The War" and "The Song" (in addition to an obvious affection for generic song titles), Second Coming still manage, through pure muscle, to bring grunge up to date. --Janiss GarzaA modern heavy rock sound with melodic vocal hooks and plenty of angst.
