Review

Big Dog, Seven Nations' third studio release (1996), is cutting edge Celtic rock at its finest. A combination of energetic traditional Scots/Irish tunes mixed with masterfully crafted original songs, this disc invites the listener to sway and dance while being left with a lasting impression of the struggles of another culture in another time. Seven Nations fuses traditional instruments such as highland bagpipes, tin whistles, and Uillean pipes with modern rock guitars and drums. The result is as unique as anything you'll ever hear. Don't be fooled by the description of this style as Celtic...Big Dog is a rock recording. Though traditional medleys are found here, lead singer and songwriter Kirk McLeod's original tunes also find their place in powerful compositions such as the title track "Big Dog." "Finish Line" is a loving tribute to a homeland far across the ocean that completes itself with a gentle reprise at the end. "Our Day Will Come" is a rollicking, danceable number that concludes with great four part harmony. This Seven Nations recording is a must for every rock/pop/alternative/world and everything in between music collection.
