Review
The Jamaican-born, New York-raised DJ/entertainer Shaggy is one of the most successful crossover artists of our time. His patented mix of ragga/dancehall, hip-hop, and R&B made his songs "Mr. Lover Lover" and "Boombastic" into global hits. Hotshot Ultramix features snappy remixes of tracks from the multiplatinum release Hotshot by several leading mixmasters, including Sting International, J.C. Moreno, Punch, Gordon Dukes, Christopher "Longman Productions" Birch, and Tony "CD" Kelly. "Special Request (Rough Cut)" swings with boom-box beats that would be at home in Kingston and Queens. The best remixes are the jeep-booming renditions of "Chica Bonita (Players Mix)," "It Wasn't Me," and the rough-cut demo "Special Request" with Ricardo "Rik Rok." The Michael Jackson-sampled "Dance & Shout (Dancehall Mix)" swings with another MC named Pee Wee. The soulfully syncopated "Too Hot to Handle" with vocalist Robin is one of three new releases, and a live version of "Angel" with Rayvon shows why Shaggy was named Billboard Male Artist of the Year in 2001.
