Review

Their songs are vivid stories drawn from life. Their contemporary folk sound is anchored in Country and Celtic roots and reminiscent of the harmony tradition of the postwar era. Lively, full-bodied, sublime, and sometimes startling arrangements are accompanied by guitars, recorders and the heart beat of the occasional bodhran.

Sirens second album "Smilin'" features fourteen compelling original songs that weave an infectious and hyptnotic spell. The tracks range from the honky-tonk sound of "Smilin' at Somebody Else" to the upscale jazz stylings of "Misery" to the maritime folk of "Beautiful Blue" to the haunting harmonies of "Em's Song" with lots of stops in between.

Stories of the sea ("The Lure of Lorelei," "Beautiful Blue") rub shoulders with upbeat hardluck songs ("Smilin' at Somebody Else," "Clickety Clack," "Fish Need Water,") and touching songs of family, love, and loss ("Em's Song," "Good Son, Good Daughter," "Rocking"). With a flawless vocal blend, inventive arrangements, and solid songs, this is one mixture that works!
