Review

The name Sons of the Desert recalls such classic Western harmony groups as Sons of the Pioneers and Riders of the Purple Sage. But the band, which came up on the Texas dancehall circuit in the late '80s, claims it took the name from an old Laurel and Hardy movie. Whatever. Change is the Sons' first release on MCA Nashville after a stillborn 1997 debut for Epic. Lead vocalist Drew Womack cowrote 5 of the 11 tracks, while brother Tim Womack took care of the electric guitar duties--most notably on a twanging, thick-stringed cover of John Hiatt's "Real Fine Love." On the album's best song, "What I Did Right," Drew Womack displays a set of blue-eyed soul pipes worthy of Michael McDonald. But too often Sons of the Desert settles for that bland, marshmallow country-pop sound--spongy on the outside, gooey on the inside--that has characterized contemporary country vocal groups from Alabama to Little Texas. Sometimes the more things Change in Nashville, the more they stay the same. --Rick Mitchell
