Review

When in the summer of 1998, David Maier (vocals, guitar) and Kai Lohwasser (drums) met through an advertisement in the German Rock Hard magazine, none of them could have known that this would be the foundation of a real heavy Thrash Metal band. The band formation was then completed when Lennart Vocke (bass) and Daniel Tschoepe (guitar) arrived - This was the birth of SPELLBOUND. The style that the four lads from the deepest south of Germany crystalied at the first set of rehearsals: Thrash, with old school elements bedded in a Bay Area theme, this mixed with an orderly portion of Death Metal and garnered with melodic Power Metal-Riffs ended the mix. After their first 2- Track Demo "First Contact" (1999), David gave over the vocal role to Lennart, so he could fully concentrate on his guitar work and about a year later the 4 track demo "Extensions" followed, where the focus was definitely put more towards Thrash with hardly any Death elements to be heard. In the same year they recorded another 4 track demo, "Violent Forces", which was even more technical and Thrashy as the recordings before. Now the old school Thrash style of EXODUS I KREATOR with raw - melodic vocals dominated. Thrash Metal, with modern, progressive elements and heavy grooves, breathtaking sound creations combined with traditional Bay Area riffing. This demo catapulted them up a level with other well known local bands such as BITTERNESS, TREMORS and PSYCHOTRON, with whom they also played a few gigs. Even a regional newspaper became interested in SPELLBOUND giving them a medium sized article after one of their live gigs! In November 2004 the guys then entered the legendary Stage-One studio, to record alongside Andy Classen (HOLY MOSES, TANKARD, DEW-SCENTED etc.) their debut album "Incoming Destiny", which was then released in 2005 with a set of gigs as promotion. The album hit the underground scene like a bomb and even the title track which will be available to download from the band's homepage as a taster, brought the band orders from outside Europe! Also SPELLBOUND are represented on the legendary underground sampler "The Reaper Comes", which will be released for the fifth time in August. Even Schmier from DESTRUCTION promoted the thrashers in the forum of the official Destruction homepage! At their shows SPELLBOUND shine through their authenticity, their enjoyment at playing and their fire tricks. Alongside the musical elements, the lyrics are an important part of the band's songs. Here, songwriter David concentrates on the theme of secrecy and withheld information. They do this in a different way to other bands and try not to look for guilty parties but concentrate on what effect this topic has on the human imagination. This knowledge sets itself on the tables of the literature from experts who have written books on this subject. With this the listener sets off on a fantastic journey through the inside of a spaceship whilst being abducted by aliens, and gets a picture of the inside of our planet and learns of new technologies to which David believes belong to our reality. Not only this, but those who always wanted to know how our planet evolved and why C: Darwin was wrong in his theories of evolution should take a look at the fascinating world which the typical SPELLBOUND lyrics form. 2006.
