Review

Music is never more engaging than when it's live, and this is especially true of bluegrass and folk. Terri Hendrix Live is no exception. With a charm and intimacy that recalls Michelle Shocked's Texas Campfire Tapes, Hendrix and her band deliver the goods with finesse but also with foot-stompin' energy. Recorded in the historic Cibolo Creek Country Club in San Antonio, Texas, Live showcases the immense talents of Lloyd Maines--best known for producing and playing with the likes of Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Joe Ely, and the Dixie Chicks--on steel guitar and mandolin, and the swinging rhythm section of Glenn Fukunaga and Paul Pearcy. Standout tracks include "Sister's Song," a caressing and intimate folk song that is a poignant testament to the bonds that tie families together, and a rousing version of the Waterboys' "Fisherman's Blues" that rivals the original. Ultimately, the most notable feature of this batch of tunes is Hendrix's great songwriting and the joy that is so obvious in her performance. This set will surely have you dancin' in your living room! --Michael Wells
