Review

Youth plus tradition has proven a popular equation, with the same dynamic propelling the teenaged Cottars as launched the careers of Nickel Creek, the precocious Peasall Sisters, and fiddle prodigy Alison Krauss. This young quartet from Nova Scotia's Cape Breton comprises two multi-instrumentalist brother-sister pairs, with Fiona and Ciaran MacGillivray splitting lead vocals, while Roseanne and Jimmy MacKenzie provide harmony and musical support. The material ranges from traditional balladry to a pair of Tom Waits songs, with performances that combine youthful exuberance and a mature virtuosity. Though the instrumental numbers should keep the dance floor filled--as the Cottars apply fiddle, whistle, banjo, and piano to a sprightly selection of jigs, reels, and even a polka medley--the lush, supple vocals of Fiona MacGillivray give the music its emotional depth and resonance. --Don McLeese
