Review

The veteran mandolin virtuoso has earned renown as a progressive instrumentalist, through his eclectic, category-defying brand of "dawg music" and his collaborations with the Grateful Dead's Jerry Garcia. Here, however, David Grisman sticks close to bluegrass tradition, in homage to the music that he says in the liner notes "has always been my first big musical thrill." Though Grisman's vocals aren't going to give Del McCoury or Ralph Stanley any sleepless nights, the tight, three-part harmonies and the quintet's sprightly instrumental interplay do the tradition proud. The material draws from the songbooks of the Carter Family ("Engine 143"), Charlie Poole ("The Baltimore Fire"), the Stanley Brothers ("Say You Won't Be Mine") and Flatt & Scruggs ("Down the Road"), with Grisman reviving his original "Old and in the Way" and contributing the instrumental "Dawggy Mt. Breakdown." Additional highlights range from the spirited rendition of Jimmy Martin's "You'll Be a Lost Ball" to the traditional spiritual "Are You Afraid to Die?" --Don McLeeseDGBX is te debut recording of the Dawg's own hand picked bluegrass band. The band includes Keith Little ( Ricky Skaggs, Dolly Parton, and the Country Gentlemen), Jim Nunally (John Reisschman & the Jaybirds), Chad Manning (fiddle), Samson Grisman (bass) and of course David Grisman on mandolin.
