Review

For the second time in an illustrious career that has spanned over three decades, perennial R&B favorites the Whispers tackle holiday fare on a 1994 album that combines some obvious choices--such as "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," a wonderfully sassy "Merry Christmas Baby," and "What Are You Doing New Year's Eve?"--with some tasteful original tunes. A zesty medley featuring "Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!," "Jingle Bell Rock," and "Winter Wonderland" brings out the quartet's jazzy harmonies, but those who have enjoyed the Los Angeles-based team's distinctive vocal stylings over the years will particularly enjoy "It's Christmas" and "Mrs. Christmas," which both sound as close to any of the group's '80s hits as anything else on this package. An obvious standout is the group's nifty reading of the Rodgers and Hammerstein classic "My Favorite Things," and since their first Christmas album is now out of print, this collection is a welcome release for lovers of traditional R&B. --David Nathan
