Review

Many multi-artist compilations are too stylistically diverse, which makes them sound like poorly conceived mix tapes rather than coherent artistic statements. 13 Ways to Live, a benefit CD for the anti-landmine advocacy group Vietnam Veterans of America Foundation (VVAF), sidesteps the musical diffusion problem by having a dozen different singer-songwriters play with the same group of backing musicians. The band, Austin-based trio Screen Door Music, is very versatile, equally inspired on David Baerwald's haunting waltz "If Wishes Were Horses," Alejandro Escovedo's apocalyptic "Notes on Air," and Patty Griffin's wistful "Dear Old Friend." All of the songs here were composed in reaction to the war in Iraq, although only two explicitly mention the conflict. The songs on 13 Ways to Live are sonically linked by the skillful playing of Screen Door Music, and emotionally linked by the intensity of the singers' performances. --Michael John SimmonsFROM TEXAS WITH COMPASSION! A stunning all-new CD from Austin's hottest artists created in response to the war in Iraq as an avenue to express their feelings, thoughts and ideas about the situation. Proceeds will benefit the most vulnerable victims of the conflict via the Nobel Peace Prize-winning Vietnam Veterans of America Foundation whose special programs in Iraq are evaluating and coordinating humanitarian aid and relief while working to address the problem of land mines and unexploded ordinance.

With Abra Moore, Jack Ingram, David Baerwald, Alejandro Escovedo, Eliza Gilkyson, Bukka Allen, Richard Buckner, Will Sexton, Ian Moore, Terry Allen, Patty Griffin, Butch Hancock, and Screen Door Music!
