Review

Beyond the Third Wave is unique among major-label Detroit compilations in that it features no material from Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson, or Juan Atkins, the Holy Trinity of this legendary genre. Instead, this compilation highlights the diversity of lesser-known (but by no means untalented) producers that live in their shadows. The compilation is arranged by style, with tracks from Claude Young, Sean Deason, and Stacey Pullen (appearing as Kosmic Messenger) providing familiar Detroit atmospherics, followed by contributions from K. Hand and Anthony "Shake" Shakir which demonstrate the city's darker take on house. Ectomorph and Will Web then provide a taste of Detroit's thriving electro scene, followed by hard and functional tracks from DJ T-1000, Terrence Dixon, and Mode Selector. Beyond... reflects the second generation of the Detroit sound: it's raw, unpolished, and uncompromising, with an intelligent but sinister edge. --Matthew Corwine
