Review

Folks in Phoenix know where to go in town to soak up world-class blues: the Rhythm Room. Acknowledging the 10th year of his club's existence, Bob Corritone has brought together bits of memorable shows from the last decade for this enjoyable album. Mississippi hill country's R.L. Burnside, a few years before idolatry by alt-rockers, sings and plays guitar from the gut about sour love and other pressing concerns on four tracks. Kim Wilson showcases his eloquence at playing harmonica and his limitations as a singer on covers of "Eyesight to the Blind" and "Five Long Years." Appearing on at least one feature track to good advantage are undervalued veterans Henry Gray, Sam Lay, Mojo Buford, Sonny Rhodes, and Nappy Brown. Still another unsung hero is Rhythm Room soundman Clarke Rigsby. --Frank-John Hadley
