Review

This collection features the best exponents of Astor Piazzolla's jazz, classical, and rock-influenced Tango Nuevo genre. The rock en Espanol superstar Omar Mollo shows off his grungy pipes on "Nostalgias," but "Lejana Tierra Mia" and "Discepolín" by female tangueras Sandra Luna and Patricia Andrade prove that the music is no longer a man's game. Bandoneon master Dino Saluzzi delivers a pensive pampa mood on "Reprise: Los Hijos de Fierro," contrasted by the urban, club remix of Carlos Libedinsky's "Vi Luz y Subín." "Toca Tango" by Juan Carlos Caceres dances with Afro-Uruguayancandombeand murga rhythms. Pianist Adrian Iaies ingeniously drops some jazzy Bill Evans licks on the swinging Piazzolla tune "Decarísimo," and another of the maestro's compositions, Milonga Del Angel, is brilliantly updated by Quinteto La Camorra for the 21st century. --Eugene Holley, Jr.The Rough Guide To Tango Nuevo showcases the diverse fragmentation of styles that tango has been experiencing since the death of Astor Piazzolla, the last greatest innovator. New artists are revolutionising tango from within, forging an urban folk style for their own times and lives. `Nuevo' (or `New') tango moves through dark-hued dub tango, tango electronica, tango with a sassy salsa twist, and even grungy tango for the rock generation. Today, contemporary tango, though still firmly rooted in the mordant, melancholy soul of the urban Argentinean, adds newly imported sounds and ideas into the mix, and the results are as stirring as they were a century ago.
