Review

Vincent Gallo's music accompanied a number of underground films in the late '70s and early '80s. Built from assorted instruments and sounding organic in composition, his music is approached with careful precision and purpose. A similar feeling imbued Gallo's 2001 album of ballads, When. Recordings of Music for Film is truth in advertising, plain and simple. The 29 pieces were compiled from Gallo's recordings for the films The Way It Is, Buffalo '66, Downtown '81, and If You Feel Foggy, Jump. The films, independent and obscure, have mostly never seen any sort of broad distribution and are known primarily to aficionados of the genre. However, the music, thoughtfully sequenced here, stands quite solidly on its own. Short and relatively quiet, the works use a range of primarily acoustic instruments--piano, guitars, percussion, and assorted exotic flavorings. The pieces are studio creations, coming to life via overdubbing, though produced with commendable restraint, allowing the music itself to take center stage at every turn. --David GreenbergerOriginal scores and compositions from a variety of films are contained herein, nearly 20 years of archival history. From tracks that were omitted from the Dowmtown '81 CD to the original tracks from the Buffalo '66 soundtrack, it's full of previously unreleased material from If You Feel Froggy, Jump recorded in 1979 'Ass Fucker', 'Ass Fucker' (Reprise) & 'I Think the Sun Is Coming Out Now'.
