Review

Anchored by studio versions of two Andy Stepanian-penned story songs, "Liza" and "Stolen Horses", the Wrinkle Neck Mules exhibit the full spectrum of their varying musical styles on their new six-song EP, Liza.

The featured title track, Liza, is perhaps the best single song example of what the Mules do. Touches of bluegrassy banjo and acoustic guitar lay the backdrop, but distorted guitar, subtle synths and vocal harmony tell this eerie kidnapping tale. Or is it mutual love? Who knows? No matter, its unsettling and beautiful at the same time. The song is a cut from the Mules' full length record, Pull the Brake and its an exciting peek behind the curtain of what the Mules created with producer Chris Kress. And Stolen Horses, once an outtake from their debut Minor Enough, has been reworked with a demented pedal steel serving as a harbinger of the accepted demise of the songs heroes; a horse-thieving gang. The song could be a Neil Young & Crazy Horse outtake with its foreboding dreamy atmosphere. And then there is the bonus live material cut from two shows on the same day in June, 2005. Four songs gleaned mostly from their debut, Minor Enough, exhibiting the sort of drunken, cut-a rug live show the Mules' put on. Again, we get grassers (17 Miles of Bourbon), rockers (No Consolation), combinations of the two (Discarded) and a rollicking harmony driven reworking of Mickey Newbury's "Why You Been Gone So Long". It makes you want to be in the crowd. Or at least get drunk.
