Review

Kyaw Kyaw Naing is a master of a little known percussion instrument, pat waing. This is a set of 21 tuned drums played in Burma (the traditional name of the nation of Mynamar). While the recording will appeal to those who like Indonesian gamelan, it is decidedly different music, less ethereal and more direct, with stronger rhythms and a wide variety of instrumental additions; drums (including hauk lon bat, a set of tuned low drums), xylophones, gongs, and Burmese reed instruments. One track features some astounding interplay with a European classical piano that is thunderous, a bit unnerving at times, and thoroughly charming. Well recorded by Rick Heizman, this set is a wonderful introduction to yet another ancient musical frontier long overlooked in the West. --Louis Gibson
