Review

Stomu Yamashta is a Japanese percussionist and keyboardist who has made a good portion of his living in the classical world, although he studied jazz drumming at Boston's Berklee School of Music. It seemed natural, back in the mid-Seventies, when prog-rock was at its height, that he collaborate with Steve Winwood (ex- Traffic, Blind Faith, Spencer Davis Group) and Michael Shrieve (ex-Santana) on an ambitious project entitled Go. Also on board (though not credited on the cover) were Return To Forever guitarist Al DiMeola, bassist Rosko Gee (ex-Can, Traffic) and Klaus Schulze, formerly of Tangerine Dream. The result was one of the most masterful albums of the progressive rock genre, truly breaking down the barriers between the pop and avant-garde forms in a way that few bands have ever done before or since. As critic Robin Denselow observes in the liner notes to the first album, the result is a work that, in parts, has echoes of Weather Report, Tangerine Dream, Stockhausen, Mike Oldfield, The Pink Floyd, soul music and bossa nova, and still leaves space for Stevie Winwood and Al DiMeola to show off their talents to the full. In the summer of 1976, Yamashta and company took their show on the road, recording a double album at the Palais des Sports in Paris; it was released by Island in 1978. Interestingly enough, it is only the live album that presents the Go concept as Yamashta originally envisioned it. For some reason, on the original studio album, side two was designed to be played first (at least in terms of the story narrative). Go fig. On this release, we opted not to rewrite history, so we left the studio album in its original vinyl sequence. This is the first release of Go and Go Live on compact disc in America (and possibly the world, though we are not 100% positive on that); it has been remastered in 2004 by Gavin Lurssen of The Mastering Lab in Hollywood.
